Stainless fasteners for desalination? What grade resists chloride stress cracking?
In the demanding world of desalination, where equipment constantly battles highly corrosive seawater, the choice of components is critical to operational longevity and safety. Among these, stainless fasteners for desalination play an outsized role. These seemingly small parts hold together massive systems—from high-pressure piping and reverse osmosis membranes to pump housings and evaporator units. Their mixed microstructure of austenite and ferrite provides exceptional toughness and corrosion resistance, making them ideal for critical high-stress components. In the most severe scenarios, super austenitic grades (like 254 SMO) or nickel-based alloys (like Alloy 625) may be specified, though at a significantly higher cost.

Beyond material grade, proper specification is crucial. This includes ensuring the fastener has the correct mechanical property class (e.g., A4-80 for 316), a smooth surface finish to minimize crevice sites, and the use of appropriate seals or lubricants that are themselves chloride-free.
